Consumers Union Seeks Support for Last Chance Effort on Health Care Reform

HospitalI got this today from Consumers Union Action Fund. It’s worth passing along.
Dear Michael,
In just days, the future of your health care could come down to only one vote.
We’re at a turning point with the Senate bill. The voice of real people must be heard to make sure the bill emerges with the protections that give you freedom and security rather than endless financial uncertainty.
The Senate bill will expand coverage and save lives–but it can and must be improved. The fact remains, if the Senate bill dies in the next week, we can’t fight on to make the final bill better as the process continues. A defeat in the Senate only serves the giant insurance companies, who will continue denying you coverage, denying you care when you need it, and making big profits doing so. Continue reading

Connecticut for Leiberman? Our last chance

Here’s a brief excerpt from a must read article in the Christian Science Monitor.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I) of Connecticut has emerged as perhaps the key player in the fate of healthcare reform legislation in the Senate – infuriating many Democrats, who accuse him of acting less out of a sense of principle than a desire to protect insurance companies, a key industry in his state.
But as Senator Lieberman and his fellow moderates push the Senate’s massive health bill toward the right, the hard political fact is that it is liberals, not Lieberman, who may soon have to make a tough decision.

Pass this on! "Single-Payer Healthcare History in a Number: S. 2837"

This is a wonderful and urgent article. Pass it on. There isn’t much time left.
Single-Payer Healthcare History in a Number: S. 2837

The time draws short to weigh in clearly with your Senators. We know they will not get to the point of passing a single-payer system this time around. But we also know they can begin setting the benchmarks for what we should do going forward. And with a yes vote on this amendment, Senators send us the message that they heard us, that they will keep fighting with us until the day when this nation no longer leaves the weak, the sick and the poor behind in the delivery of its most basic human rights.

Post-Racial and Post-Partisan?

President Obama in the Oval Office

President Obama in the Oval Office

Joe Conason writes in Salon that former CNN anchor Lou Dobbbs sound like he is running for office and that if he does it will be the GOP’s nightmare.  “Lou Dobbs for president!” is the headline on the op-ed.
It send a chill up my spine, but I’ll leave Lou and his whole schtick alone for now.  Rather I want to focus on one thing Canuson reports that Dobbs said in his first radio broadcast after leaving CNN that just completely baffles me.  Nor is Dobbs is not the only one who has made the allegation, many on the right have.
He said that President Obama “focuses on the partisan and racial” in a “21st century post-partisan, post-racial society.”  I don’t know what planet Dobbs is living on, but we do not live in a post racial society.  I do think that since the Civil Rights Movement, we have slow progress toward this becoming a nation in which race doesn’t matter, but we’ve still got a long way to go.

OK, I changed my mind!

Before I get back to work, I feel I need to take a moment and state openly that I was wrong about the health care reform bill. It is bad, evil and scary. Had I been watching wall to wall coverage of Congress like all good Americans should, I would have know that. Fortunately, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report caught me up to speed last night.
First there was this clip:

Socialists like the AARP and the AMA

I’m going in for surgery tomorrow, a procedure I can have done because I have an employer that provides health insurance. Thank heaven for that, but deserve it. Not like those millions of uninsured Americans. They must not be working hard enough.
Now those radical, bleeding heart, liberal Democrats want to provide insurance to everybody and all these radical groups are lining up to support them, like the American Association of Retired Persons(AARP) and the American Medical Association. Oh, and the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association,
and a whole bunch of other godless communist organizations like that.
Seriously America, reform is in your interest and if it fails the only people who will have won will be the insurance companies!

CSM Columnist Argues Our Flag is Not a Prop

The Flag of the United States of America

The Flag of the United States of America

This is such a good piece about the symbolism of our national flag. Like the columnist, it has pretty much gotten to the point that if I see a flag displayed too prominently on an email or on a web page, I assume that the accompanying message is likely to be insulting and full of unsupported, reckless claims and attacks on the duly elected President of the United States.
How did the flag become this? It should be a symbol of our national unity, not a cudgel we use to beat those who don’t agree with us.
But Amy Hardin Turosak says it so much better than I in her piece “Our Flag is Not a Prop” for the Christian Science Monitor. It’s pithy, concise and to the point. She argues:
Q- How will my doctor icks.org cialis professional generic treat my BPH ?Ans- All enlarged prostates do not necessarily need medical treatment.Options include medicines & various forms of surgery. It’s one of the most recently introduced drugs for treating viagra 25mg online erectile dysfunction. You can have a good relationship with your wife and have low sex drive, then you may opt for sildenafil citrate cialis viagra canada medicines to deal with erection problems in you.

The flag must not be used as a point of argument but as a symbol of the solidarity that binds the diversity of our nation.
But, if you protest, you have a responsibility to protest based on fact. This is not a university football game. This is the future of our country.

He did all that based on images in a library book? It took me hours to set up the surround sound in my family room, and I had diagrams and specific color coded cables! I’m calling William Kamkwamba next time. You know all those leaks in the Big Dig Tunnels Here in Boston where I live, they should have just told William Kamkwamba what they wanted done. Remember the Mars Climate Orbiter that NASA lost because they confused Metric and Imperial measurements? Maybe William Kamkwamba should have taken charge. I’m exaggerating, of course, but this kid’s story does make you wonder, if he can do that with what he had, what would he do with all the benefits I have. As he says in the interview, what if he had Google?
