Binghamton Faculty Remember Richard Antoun

In an article published yesterday by Inside Binghamton University, faculty members remember Dick Antoun, who was murdered a few days ago by a Ph.D student.  For part of the time that I was a Ph.D. student there, Professor Antoun was director of the Middle East and North Africa Program, including when I and three of my friends organized a three week Maghrebi Arts Festival and when we organized a MENA Students Group.  He was very supportive.
I think Steve Straight hit the nail on the head when he described Antoun as a peacemaker.  Straight joined the Anthropology Department at the same time as Antoun, and noted

The End of "As the World Turns" the End of an Era

As_The_World_turns_soap_opera_6The cancellation of daytime dramas is arguably one of the most significant media signs of a shift in American society.  This show was on for 54 years.  The Guiding Light, canceled 3 months ago, began on radio and was on 72 YEARS!  It’s kind of sad to see them go.  My mother used to watch them, sort of, anyway.  She had them on in the house while she did other things.  And once reached an age that the educational programming our local PBS station ran most of the day (Sesame Street, Electric Company, Zoom…) was no no longer of interest to me , it just didn’t get changed.  You’d think serial drama would be hard to follow if you only watched it at most a few days a year when you were home sick from school.  But in fact the plot progresses really slowly on those shows.  The musical queues, angles and camera work enhance the drama to the point that you feel like you can’t miss a day, but in fact you can miss the show for months and catch up in a day.

Quotation on the Relation Between Economy and Democracy

Quote of the day:

Rain does not follow the plow. Political freedom, whatever the market evangelists may tell us, is not an automatic by-product of a growing economy; democratic institutions do not spring up, like flowers at the feet of the magi, in the tire tracks of commerce. They just don’t. Richard T. Antoun, Professor Emiritus, Anthropology, Binghamton University

Richard T. Antoun — a respected Binghamton University anthropology professor who grew up in Shrewsbury — spent his entire career seeking peace. His work focused on bridging the divide between religions and cultures, particularly in the Middle East.

The student, Abdulsalam S. al-Zahrani, 46, was from Saudi Arabia. Mr. Antoun was serving on the dissertation committee for Mr. Zahrani’s graduate thesis and apparently had known him for quite some time, according to news reports.
The university’s Web site says Mr. Zahrani’s doctoral thesis is called, “Sacred Voice, Profane Sight: The Senses, Cosmology, and Epistemology in Early Arabic Culture.”

Does Google Even Understand What News Is?

Google’s algorithms are very handy for shopping or entertainment recommendations. But I don’t like it “personalizing” news. Serving readers news based on what they’ve read can lead to a kind of tunnel vision where they’re insulated from the dissenting views and unpleasant truths. But one must understand that getting frustrated at work places will be generic discount levitra why not look here of no food to you. Newspapers emerged to serve communities, and communities are inherently hotpots of dissent. Targeting news stories as if they were advertisements runs counter to that important service. I want a news gadget bringing me stories that make me uncomfortable.
–“Does Google Even Understand What News Is?

Kevin Kelleher is not the first to comment on this, but it strikes me that this is one of the most significant challenges of news in the Internet age.  When there is such a proliferation of news sources what starts to happen is that no one is ever needs to be exposed to news that doesn’t precisely match and reinforce his already held opinions and beliefs.
This is a good article and this is but one of the points he makes.  I recommend it.

Why People Pirate Music

Bonjour CD

Bonjour CD

I regularly record Acousticfrom TV5 Monde on my DVR, and I just finished watching this week’s program with Rachid Taha. I’m a big fan of Taha and on the episode he sang some songs from a new album called Bonjour. They weren’t the best songs he ever recorded, but I liked them and I want the CD. I have all Taha’s records, and I want this one, too.
So I set out looking for it. The first place I looked was iTunes. I’m always ambivalent about albums on iTunes, though I buy most of my music there. I like the instant gratification. I can also find stuff that’s hard to find in stores. As record stores disappear, its not easy to find anything but the biggest hits in retailers like BestBuy, Barnes&Noble or Borders. On the other hand, I like having all that information the downloads don’t provide but that usually comes in a CD: names of composers and lyricists, producers and members of the band, information about where and when something was recorded, anecdotes from the sessions, photographs and all that stuff you usually find in the liner notes that accompany a CD. But it wasn’t in iTunes, anyway. Continue reading

Paranoia about Islam in the West

In the opinion of Arlington (Tennessee) Mayor Russell Wiseman, President Barack Obama’s speech on Tuesday night on the war in Afghanistan was deliberately timed to block the Christian message of the “Peanuts” television Christmas special.
Wiseman made the statements on his Facebook page, where he declared Obama to be a Muslim. Only people on Wiseman’s “friend’s list” had access to the post. He has more than 1,600 friends on Facebook.
–via The Commercial Appeal

Before I get to the main reason why I am writing today, let me address the good Mayor’s comment that President Obama is a Muslim. He has said time and time again that he is not, but even if he is lying, take a look at his behavior. He eats pork, drinks alcohol, consorts with folks of all faiths, goes to a Christian church and never prays. He’s a very bad Muslim, if he is. More than that, he preempted the Peanuts Christmas Special to order 30,000 troops into a Muslim country! With friends like that….
