Thematic playlist: Whiskey and Moonshine

A while back, I got a lot of peoples help to create lists of train songs that I posted in this blog. That was a fun project, and I’ve been eager to start another. I subsequently indicated that my next list would be Protest Songs and Corporate Greed. It seemed relevant given the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico, the banking crisis, and so many other current issues. I haven’t gotten far on that, but am still working on it. It’s just that it’s such a heavy topic.
So I’m going to lighten it up a bit and start another project at the same time, this one on one one of my favorite things: Whiskey. Just to keep it interesting, lets not limit ourselves to whiskey, but also moonshine or, the name I like, “White Lightening.”

This will be a specific list. I’m not looking for songs about alcohol or drinking in general, or about any other kinds of liquor. Here are to of my favorites. One is an old classic, but a fairly recent version. The first is sung by Allison Moorer, who I could say a lot about, but that voice speaks for itself. The second is by Cory Branan, a new favorite artist whose voice I like, and who writes very funny lyrics. I find that appealing.
I intensely dislike slide show music videos like the kind you find on YouTube, but this was the only recording I could find to include in this entry. So here it is. I think here version is amazing, full of pathos, longing and acceptance. If god likes jug whiskey, she sings, then paradise awaits. It not, well, who knows. Amazing!

Cory’s performance of this has gotten more feverish and exciting of late, as he stomps his books along with the guitar riffs between verses. I had a hard time choosing between this and another performance at this link.

Finally, just as a reminder that I’m still gathering them, here is a musical protest against corporate greed par excellence, though definitely not a pacifist one. It’s from 1984, by Bruce Cockburn.
