The Weary Kind

Ok, so maybe I’m just a little bit obsessed with this guy’s music, but I’ve got to share this video with you. This is “The Weary Kind“, written by T-Bone Burnett and Ryan Bingham, and performed by the latter. Ryan Bingham is just amazing, but I’ve said that in this blog before. This song is one of his best. It’s haunting in itself, but I can’t imagine many people with a voice better able to convey to lyrics and sentiment in them than Bingham. But I don’t have to describe it, do I? Give it listen. Then rush on over to this page in Amazon.com where you can hear more samples and buy the music too. I suspect you will want to.

The song is from the film Crazy Heart, which I saw last night. It starred Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal with some pretty impressive supporting cast members, too. It’s the directorial debut of Scott Cooper, who also wrote the script. It’s a near perfect debut, too. Unless, perhaps, I was so wowed by the incredible performances of Bridges and Gyllenhaal to notice other flaws. The scene in which Jean is so overwhelmed by Bad’s ability to write amazing songs so easily, is extraordinarily moving. When those whose appreciation of the arts is profound and studied are in the presence of those for those of true artistic brilliance for whom acts of great creative achievement come with great ease, it is overwhelming and even confusing. The scene captures that brilliantly.

It’s cut too short to capture the emotion of the scene, but you get the point.
The only criticism I have of the film is that I think the title should have been “The Weary Kind.” It’s just a little more in keeping with the mood. But that’s just my opinion.
If you’ve seen the movie, I’d love to know what you think of it. If you haven’t, check it out. Then let me know what you think.
