The Coolest Sport in the Winter Olympics?

Have you seen the Google logo on their search page yet?  For tiny percentage of the public that doesn’t use Google as a search engine, Google periodically alters its logo to mark holidays or commemorate certain events, etc.  There’s a gallery in their site.  Today the two instances of the letter “o” are transformed into curling stones.  If you don’t know what curling stones are, where have you been?  It is only the coolest sport in the Winter Olympics!
Yes, it looks like shuffle board on ice and belongs on the lido deck on a senior cruise, except that it’s played on ice.  And no, I had no idea how it was played until a week or two ago.  I remember seeing it four years ago in Olympic coverage and thinking to myself, “Weird!” But that was the extent of my knowledge. With these Olympics it seems like its being talked about everywhere even if only to poke fun.  But now that the sport has been a big part of  two episodes of two of my favorite shows of all time, it’s got my attention.
On the Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert tried out for the Olympic team and failed miserably.  No surprise there.  It would have been amazing but not very funny if he had discovered some secret talent for it.

Lisa, Maggie and Bart Show Support for Mom, Dad, and USA

Homer and Marge Simpson, on the other hand, did discover a hidden talent for it in this week’s episode of that ever popular series. In the real Olympics, Curling teams are male or female, but in the Olympics on this week’s episode a mixed team including Skinner, his mother, Homer and Marge win the Gold Medal for the United States, mostly because of Marge’s superior “sweeping” ability. It’s a brilliant episode. This is just one guy’s opinion, but you would think that after 20 years a television show would get old. For sure The Simpsons has weeks that are duds. But this week wasn’t one of them. Just the half a minute or so with Bart, Lisa and Maggie holding up placards to spell three letter words in support of Mom and Dad was brilliant. Watch it online (Season 21, Episode 12) while it is available.
Now it is on the Google logo. Ok, so maybe I am easily swayed by television, but I’m now kind of intrigued by this sport, at least enough to leave it on if I tune in and that’s what’s being covered. The URL for the web site of the United States Curling Association is CurlingRocks.net. Clever pun since those things they send sailing down the ice are called “stones” or “rocks.” But maybe there’s a little something to the Curling Rocks! part, too.
