Cinema and the Maghrib

Though movies were made in the colonial Maghrib, the history of North African cinema in its own distinctive form begins with independence and the birth of the postcolonial nations in the region. It has benefited from numerous years of regional collaborations within the Maghrib, with other countries in the Middle East and with Europe. Though cinema as an industry is often dependent on national and international funding, and distribution in national, regional, and international markets mirrors global economic relationships, it has begun to see a measure of commercial success in the movie theaters of the region, and filmmakers from each nation have been able to participate in the elaboration of a national and regional cinema that has brought prestige through awards received by various North African directors and artists at international festivals in the Maghreb, Europe and at US film festivals. The region has also become a popular site for directors from various countries, including Europe and the United States, to shoot their films. This conference explores all these aspects of the history and dynamics of filmmaking in and about the region. Proposals are invited from scholars working in fields such as film studies, history, literary and cultural studies, linguistics, sociology, anthropology, art history, architecture, geography, cartography, international relations, religious studies and any other related disciplines. Cependant, les films connaissent souvent un succès national, et les réalisateurs nord-africains qui participent régulièrement et se voient décerner des prix aux festivals de cinéma sur le continent africain, en Europe et en Amérique du Nord (Etats-Unis et Canada) contribuent au prestige croissant d’un cinéma national et régional. L’Afrique du Nord est également une région recherchée par des réalisateurs européens et nord-américains qui viennent y tourner leurs films. La conférence explore tous ces aspects de l’histoire du cinéma au Maghreb ainsi que les diverses relations qui régissent l’industrie du cinéma dans la région. Nous invitons les spécialistes qui travaillent dans le domaine des études cinématographiques, littéraires et culturelles, la linguistique, la sociologie, l’anthropologie, l’histoire de l’art, l’architecture, la géographie, la cartographie, les relations internationales, les études religieuses et toutes autres disciplines pertinentes à soumettre des propositions de communication sur le sujet du cinéma au Maghreb. Sujets possibles: L’histoire et le développement du cinéma maghrébin; La religion au cinéma; Sexualité et genre au cinéma; Questions sociales et politiques au cinéma; Courants esthétiques, thematiques, narratifs dans le cinéma nord-africain; Le Mghreb dans le cinéma occidental; L’impact de l’industrie cinématographique nationale et étrangère sur les nations d’Afrique du Nord; La réception du cinéma nord-africain, nationalement et à l’etranger; Les festivals du film de Carthage et Marrakech; L’aspect économique du cinéma en Afrique du Nord; Analyses thématiques et naratives du cinéma d’Afrique du Nord; Comparaisons entre les divers cinémas nationaux de la région; Les réalisateurs, acteurs ou films importants; Les relations entre le cinéma et les autres arts; Cinéma et censure; Nouvelles technologies et cinéma; Propriété intellectuelle en droit et en pratique. Believe it or not, my work on this conference is really a hobby and going to it will be my vacation.  It didn’t start out this way, but increasingly this is less and less part of my work.  That’s why its here, in a non-work profile. That’s okay, though.  I find the time and I really do enjoy it.
